ASESSMENT OF AIN GHAZAL PRE-TREATMENT |

The original Ain Ghazal Treatment Plant (AGTP) located in Amman was constructed in the mid-1960s. With operations launching in 1969, it was designed as an activated sludge treatment system with a capacity of 60,000 CM/day. However, at the start of operations, the actual load on the plant immediately exceeded the design capacity. In 1982 an AGTP expansion plan was proposed. The As-Samra Waste Stabilization Ponds (WSP) were constructed originally as a temporary measure, while the Ain Ghazal plant began handling screening and grit removal only. Modifications to the Ain Ghazal pretreatment system were being completed earlier this year, including construction of a second 1,500 mm siphon between Ain Ghazal and As-Samra. Commissioning of the pre-treatment system and siphon are in the final stages. The current average sewage flow at Ain Ghazal and As-Samra is about 170,000 CM/day, including about 10,000 CM/day of septic sewage from tankers. A Build-Operate-Transfer contract is currently being negotiated for the construction of a new As-Samra Wastewater Treatment Plant with a design capacity of 270,000 CM/day. The BOT Contract RFP calls for the Ministry of Water and Irrigation (MWI) to expand the Ain Ghazal pretreatment system by the year 2005 to meet the design capacity of the new plant. DAI conducted an assessment (including operational tests) of the existing Ain Ghazal pre-treatment plant and facilities to provide a recommendation on the expansion needs of Ain Ghazal to meet the BOT contract requirements and to assess possible refurbishment and cost-effective modifications to the existing plant facilities to pre-treat septic sewage at the plant. This was completed in order to ensure that the expansion plans fully address design and operational requirements per the proposed BOT Contract. |
