Integrated Water and
Coastal Resources Management

Background

INTEGRATING COASTAL RESOURCE CONCERNS INTO RIVER BASIN MANAGEMENT IN THE SOUSS-MASSA (MOROCCO COASTAL RESOURCES)

BACKGROUND
PROJECT OBJECTIVES
CURRENT STATUS

In this Task Order, DAI will help identify the most important coastal resources issues facing the Souss-Massa basin and help clarify their links to inland water concerns and overall basin management. A study tour of United States examples of coastal zone management will be attended by Moroccan decision-makers. DAI will also organize the analyses of selected technical and socio-economic issues that impact on habitat, living resources, and physical and biological integrity. DAI will use these issues as the basis for organizing a national symposium about critical coastal concerns, particularly with respect to governance issues, and will promote stakeholder support for coastal zone protection by designing a pilot project that demonstrates the social and economic impact of improved coastal zone management. Several critical problems in the coastal zone have been raised by local and international consultants under this work order. These problems include marine water quality and its relationship to municipal wastewater, expansion of the tourist sector and its impact on water use from and salt intrusion in the local aquifer, and potential alternative sources of water such as reuse of wastewater on green spaces and golf courses or as augmentation of estuary flows.
